How to Start a Personal Sadhana Practice

We all are busy people, period. The truth is that nowadays, most of us run from place to place plugged into any kind of technological device.

However, it is necessary that you can take even 15 minutes a day to “find yourself” and move through the rest of your day in a much happier, more inspired, and aware way. I invite you to consider practical implementation stuff in a spiritual light and make these practices your sadhana.

The word sadhana is a Sanskrit word, and it means spiritual discipline. In other words, sadhana is a personal spiritual practice, a person usually does daily, which allows you to connect with yourself.

Sadhana can be anything that makes your heart happy. For example, practicing power yoga every day is sadhana. There is only one rule since there is a spiritual element, there are no exceptions, no days off. So here are some ideas to create your personal sadhana:

  1. Asanas

Yoga Postures are practiced with differing level of mastery depending on the dimension the person is aware of and putting energy into. For example, the most basic level of practicing the poses is physical, so start the day with some Sun Salutations to have energy all day long.

  1. Morning Intention

Start your day with an intention and write it if possible. It may be that you want to feel great or you want a day filled with peace. Likewise, try to dedicate your daily practice to someone else or yourself as if it were a gift.

  1. Breathing

The next level of depth of practice in Yoga is the breath. But not only breathe for the sake of it, breath to connect with your inner self and to be present. Take deep breaths and be grateful. In some way,  the quality of the practice depends on the quality of the breath.

  1. Visualization

The most advanced regard of Yoga practice and the most beneficial use of the human mind is found when we envisioned. Visualize the psychic intention and energy of the posture to complete the integration of the body, mind, and spirit that all teachers refer to in eastern practices.

  1. Don’t over complicate it

A sadhana should not be a static routine. In fact, what works for you on a Monday may not work for you by Friday. Be flexible and trust yourself to adapt when changes appear.

Finally, The best advice I can give you is to enjoy it and commit to it every day, no matter what. This is a secret that will help you handle every situation in life, and it just needs 15 minutes a day.  We can all find 15 minutes in the day, right?
