Patanjali Yoga Sutras instruction on a pure mind in life. Fred Busch Teacher Training discussion on Patanjali.

Now here comes the big one; for the prevention of the obstacles, one truth should be practiced constantly. Honestly guys, this could be the Sutra that runs your whole life, you do this Sutra, you practice this one and you will be blissfully enlightened and content and happy in your life forever.

Here is the Sutra (1.33) By cultivating friendliness towards happiness, compassion towards misery, gladness towards virtue and indifference towards vice. The mind becomes pure.

That is an instruction manual on how to live, right there! That is it! That's the instruction manual, you don't need anything else, except surrender to God if you want; but plain and simple, when you see happiness; friendliness towards that happiness, glad that they're happy, not jealous, friendliness towards your happiness.

You see misery-like the woman that I saw today, compassion! By the way compassion is not pity, compassion is not pity, so don't confuse those two. Compassion may be the opposite of pity; you may ask me for a dollar and I say no! But I look at you in the eyes and I am saying no to god and that is so compassionate, that I look at you like you are a real human being and not some piece of crap, like everyone else looks at you. Even when they give you a dollar like-big fucking dollar-take the dollar and don't look at me. They might take the dollar but that's pity, that's not compassion. Compassion, is I don't care if I give you the money or not, I'm going to look at you like you're a real person, you're the same as me and that's all there is to it.

Remember, no person can rise above the highest potential which is within you and no person can go below the lowest potential which is also within you. Never forget that! Did everyone understand what I just said? That no, nobody, no saint can be more spiritual than you and no bad person or, or unconscious person can be less conscious than the kind of unconscious that you also have the potential for doing; you have the potential to go as far as they went and you have the potential to go as high as they went. So compassion; don't pretend that you couldn't be there, but I am defining compassion as not pity. When you see misery, you employ compassion ok?

Moving on, when you see virtue, again gladness, happiness, people are doing the right thing, they are doing the good things. When you see Paramahamsa Nithyananda, who is basically God on earth, we become overwhelmingly grateful and glad and happy that he exists, not jealous or envious that he is better or more spiritual than us. I see virtue I am glad, I love it; but here's the important part, this is the key. But when you see vice, not aversion, not hatred, indifference! That's when the stillness comes to the mind, no judgment, indifference, indifference! Meaning, that even if it appears that it's not good in any number of ways, you do not get emotionally charged about it. Indifference! Just neutral, you're doing some evil stuff, well, can I help it, can I stop it? Can I get into the middle of this situation and fight? Ok, maybe then I'll do it, if I see it in front of my eyes; but if it's something that's not in my control, which is mostly everything; and I see vice, which we see all around us…I mean vice is everywhere. Everywhere is vice and vice means things that are perverting for us, that are--that are not pure, that are not helpful in our evolution as spiritual people; but it's everywhere, it's our whole society is one big vice. The key is that you don't hate it, you don't become adverse it and you don't wish it wasn't there, it's simply indifference. That is the technique to living-as he says-what does he say? With a… Pure mind! The mind becomes pure, ‘Satvic' is the word ok? I think that Sutra can be as I said--framed! Just do this, you know? It's so good, it's so beautiful. See happy people, be happy for them, see miserable people, bring compassion but real compassion, see virtuous people be glad for their virtue and you see vice as if you didn't even see it…indifference!

Go ahead and do whatever you want; you know….you eat meat, doesn't bother me, you're going to eat meat, doesn't bother me. What does your eating meat have to do with me? Except it has to do with the planet, but I am still going to be indifferent about it because i don't deserve to have negativtiy inside my body. Ok? Fine!
